We talk about them a lot, and there's a reason why we do. We're talking about the High Fives Foundation located right here in Truckee, CA. High Fives is a 501C3 that focuses on preventing life-changing injuries and provides resources and hope if they happen. Their story is remarkable, from their incredible mission, inspiring vision, and values to their incredible staff and passionate athletes. For nearly 10 years, Boreal / Woodward Tahoe has worked alongside The High Fives for cool projects, rad events, and FUNdraising efforts like Play Forever Fridays. For this reason, we couldn't be more stoked to share this blog post with you about one of our favorite athletes from The High Fives Foundation.
"From their incredible mission, inspiring vision, and values to their dedicated staff and passionate athletes..."
Meet Jay Rawe, High Fives Athlete #206. Seven years ago, Jay had a base-jumping accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. After his injury, he moved back to Florida with his mom, and as he describes it, "It was like I was sleepwalking for three years." When Jay first saw an adaptive ski called a sit-ski, he had no interest in trying it. He described them as slow, boring and it wouldn't offer him the freedom that he craved. In the first years of his injury, Jay felt alone and isolated. Then he finally decided to try Sit-Skiing out. For the first time in years, Sit –Skiing allowed him to feel free, connecting him with his friends, and he could creatively express himself again. It made him feel alive.
"It was the support that he didn't know he needed"
Four years ago, Jay met the High Fives foundation through a friend. High Fives has been able to help him out with Physical Therapy, expensive equipment, and a community of people who knew what he was going through. It was the support that he didn't know he needed. The partnership between High Fives and Woodward Tahoe allows Jay to train to become a better athlete. Jay hinted that he might have something new up his sleeves for the upcoming season, I guess we will have to wait and see...
"Buy a ticket on select Fridays for only $25, and we'll give $5 of every ticket to our friends at High Fives Foundation"
We need your help to beat the record we set last year through our Play Forever Fridays. It's easy, all you have to do is buy a ticket on select Fridays for only $25, and we'll give $5 of every ticket to our friends at High Fives Foundation and other local non-profit organizations. Either way you shake it, it's a win/win for everybody — you get to shred for only $25 and give back while doing it!
